Visit Somerset Dam   

Located just 90 minutes from Brisbane, Somerset Dam provides the visitor with a unique experience revolving around the dam itself.  Boating, camping, fishing, swimming, and bush walking are just a few of the recreational activities you can experience both in and around the waterway. Somerset Dam allows motorized and non-motorized water craft. There are several boat ramps located in this area which means the entire family can enjoy an action packed day of waterskiing, wakeboarding, knee boarding, tubing, fishing, canoeing and kayaking.  There are two designated swimming only areas as well. These are located at Kirkleagh and The Spit. This stunning location is perfect for a family day out, or a weekend away. The Somerset Dam region also offers camping grounds and holiday houses. Somerset Park Camping is located just below the dam wall and offers short/long stays, caravanning, camping and is RV friendly.  
 

Visit Lake Wivenhoe  

Lake Wivenhoe is located approximately 90 minutes-drive north-west of Brisbane. This lake is the largest lake in South East Queensland and offers numerous recreational activities.   

When visiting Lake Wivenhoe you can enjoy barbecues, picnics, playgrounds and camping grounds such as: Captain Logan Campground & Lumley Hill Campground. Canoeing and kayaking, multi-use trails for walking, running, mountain biking and  horse-riding are all be located within this picturesque natural environment. Wivenhoe is also a great spot for swimming, scuba diving or snorkeling.  Logan's Inlet has a designated swimming area where you can also enjoy sailing, fishing and boating (6 knot speed limit applies). Don't forget to purchase a fishing permit if you intend on dropping a line in Lake Wivenhoe.

The Somerset Region boasts numerous country hotels, retreats and farm stays and all offer good ol’ country hospitality. Be sure to visit the famous Bottle Tree Hotel for their bull riding events in Glamorgan Vale or check out the regular live music at the Esk Grand Hotel and Brisbane Valley Tavern. You won’t be disappointed with the range of entertainmenton offer at these venues and at the same time you can enjoy the flavours of classic pub cuisine. 

  

If you prefer a more intimate dining experience there is an abundance of cafes and restaurants located right throughout the region. The Nash Cafe and Gallery is housed in a classic Queenslander in the quaint town of Esk.  Located in beautiful surroundings, you can enjoy a Devonshire tea on the wraparound veranda and sample some delicious home-made sweet treats. Love a good milkshake? Why not stop by the Red Deer Café. They have a whopping 18 flavours available for you to choose from.   

The Old Fernvale Bakery Café is definitely worth a visit. This historic bakery and café has created over 140 gourmet pie varieties since 1989 and has won more awards for its pies than any other bakery in Queensland! Whether it is a delicious freshly baked apple pie or a savory steak pie your taste buds will love you for all the right reasons. It’s well worth the while to grab a few extra pies to take home and pop in the freezer! 

  

Discover the Rail Trail   

Pack your bike, your hiking gear or giddy – up on your horse and trek along the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail. The path traces the former train corridor that extends from Fernvale to Yarraman. The trail covers over 160km of outback bushland. This rail-trail allows each traveler to choose their own journey. Travelers can do small sections at a time or complete larger sections each day. Travelers can choose to complete the entire rail trail and camp or stay in local accommodation along the way. Alternatively, travelers can choose to do a day trip to the trail and complete a smaller section at their own pace. The path is accessible via any of the well-preserved former railway stations along the route.
